The West Monroe City Council voted during its regular meeting held on Tuesday, April 13 to propose a mixed method election plan to the U.S. Department of Justice.
The Mayor and Board of Aldermen were presented prospective litigation with the U.S. Department of Justice that would require a change in the method of electing the members of the West Monroe Board of Aldermen in order to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act.
The Aldermen voted to present to the U.S. Department a Justice a mixed method election plan with three members elected from single member districts and two members of the Board of Aldermen elected at-large instead of all members being elected from single member districts. ....

Tony Scott, a Republican and member of the Monroe Town Council, won a special election Tuesday to represent the 112th District of Monroe and part of Newtown. (Patch Graphics)
MONROE, CT Tony Scott, a Republican and member of the Monroe Town Council, won a special election Tuesday for the 112th District seat vacated earlier this year by JP Sredzinski, according to unofficial results provided by the Monroe Registrar of Voters office.
Scott defeated Democrat Nick Kapoor, a member of the Monroe Board of Education, for the post. The district encompasses Monroe and part of Newtown, and the unofficial tally had Scott receiving 2,248 votes to Kapoor s 1,948. A third independent candidate, Bill Furrier, of Newtown, received 31 votes. ....

The City of Monroe will host its annual State of the City address on Sunday.
Traditionally, it is an in-person event that draws about 500 people, but because of COVID-19 restrictions, administrators are having to think outside the box.
This year’s State of the City will be broadest on television.
On Easter Sunday, Mayor Friday Ellis, the Monroe City Council, and other city employees are meeting you where you live.
KNOE will air the Monroe State of the City at 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
KTVE/KARD will air the Monroe State of the City at 10:30 p.m. ....
