The City of Monroe remembers former Mayor Abe Edward Pierce III

He was a brilliant man, he said.
Freeze said Pierce also helped him write his dissertation while attending graduate school.
Ouachita Parish School Board member Rev. Harold McCoy regarded Pierce as a mentor after meeting him as a teenager.
I started involving myself in community service in the early 70s and Mr. Pierce was one of the individuals who was highly regarded as a mentor, he said. He was more of a hands-on type mentor. He didn t socially distance himself from many of the younger guys who were in the next cadre of leadership.
McCoy praised Pierce for his dedication as a deacon at the New Tabernacle Baptist Church in Monroe. ....

Mohawk Seafood Tavern sports new arts and entertainment mural in Monroe

Downtown Monroe just got a little more colorful with the addition of a mural on the side of Mohawk Seafood Tavern.
The new mural, on the southwest corner of Louisville Avenue and N. Eighth Street, welcomes passersby to the arts and entertainment Downtown Monroe has to offer. It was commissioned by the nonprofit Downtown Monroe Alliance and sponsored by Century Next Bank.
Jason Byron Nelson, the local artist commissioned for the mural, said he crafted a design within 48 hours of the project s approval and completed the mural in mid-June.
We have restaurants, clubs, bars and the brewery there s a lot going on, and sometimes we re thinking just because of the way our city s laid out, maybe people don t know about it, said Nelson, who studied art at the University of Louisiana Monroe. And so [Downtown Monroe Alliance] wanted something that was literally pointed that way. ....
