Bokaro: The district animal husbandry department (AHD) has sent samples of 107 dead birds to Kolkata for an avian influenza test in the last two weeks, Bokaro animal husbandry officer Manoj Mani said on Thursday. “Around 8-13 samples were collected from each of the eight blocks for the test, the reports of which are awaited,” he added. Birds ranging from chickens, pigeons, crows to owls, were found dead across various parts of the district in the past few days. For instance, couple of days ago, some AHD officials said, a carcass of an owl was found by the locals near Chinmaya Vidyalaya. Similarly on Wednesday morning, four birds were found dead at a field in Bodiya village under Bermo block. ....

Bokaro: Restaurants and hotels, which were on the verge of recovering the losses incurred last year due to the Covid-induced lockdown, are staring at another lean period in the wake of bird flu scare. Many of them are recording a dip in sales as customers are giving chicken dishes a miss. Amit Johar, who owns West Inn hotel here, said the sale of chicken items has dropped by 25% in the past few days. “The drop in sales has forced us to innovate and add more vegetarian items to our menu,” he added. Vikram Shanan, owner of the popular Zaika resort and a host of other restaurants here, said, “Due to bird flu scare, the demand for chicken items has dropped by 50% and customers are opting for vegetarian food and even demanding fish. However, the demand for mutton has not gone up.” ....
Ranchi/Jamshedpur/Bokaro: The demand for poultry chicken in Ranchi started plunging after cases of avian influenza were reported from seven states. Denizens, who usually savour chicken dishes at home, eateries and street food carts, are giving them a miss fearing bird flu. Last week, chicken was sold in Ranchi at Rs 150 a kilogram but with the number of customers dwindling, many traders have begun slashing prices to exhaust their stock. Sarwar Qureshi, who runs a shop in Kokar, slashed the price of his poultry chicken to Rs 120 per kilogram. “I had to reduce the price as my customers dwindled. The sale is plummeting despite the low price,” Qureshi said. Most of Ranchi’s poultry chicken stock are shipped from hatcheries in Gumla and Khunti. ....
