A 71-year-old Supreme Court on Saturday bid farewell to its seventh woman Judge, Justice Indu Malhotra. Justice Indira Banerjee is the eighth, who will retire in September next year. Like the first woman SC Judge M Fathima Beevi, Malhotra had a less than three year tenure. While Malhotra was the first woman advocate to become a SC Judge, Beevi was recalled from retirement to become a SC judge in October 1989. She retired from Kerala HC as a Judge in April 1989. Five years after retiring as the first Muslim woman SC Judge, Beevi was appointed Governor of Tamil Nadu in January 1997. But she had to resign in 2001 when her controversial decision to appoint J Jayalalithaa as chief minister, despite her conviction and consequent disqualification to contest elections, was struck down by the SC. ....
Haryana Chief Minister Khattar pledges to uplift state s poor ANI | Updated: Mar 01, 2021 17:24 IST Chandigarh (Haryana) [India], March 1 (ANI): Chief Minister of HaryanaManohar Lal Khattar on Monday pledged to uplift the economic status of poor families residing in the state and for this, the state government has resolved to increase the family income of around one lakh families having the lowest income to at least Rs one lakh annually. Khattar said that the identification of the poor families will be done through a family identity card survey, the Directorate of Information, Public Relations and Languages Department of (DPR), Haryana informed. Shri Vishwakarma Skill University (SVSU), Gurgaon which is India s first government skill university will create a course for those standing on the lowest rungs and self-help groups will also be included in the scheme. ....
