Helicopter Association International (HAI) is pleased to announce the California National Guard 40th Combat Aviation Brigade CH-47 and UH-60 Black Hawk crews are the 2021 recipients of the association’s Humanitarian Service Award. The award, sponsored by Sikorsky, honors the person or persons who best demonstrate the value of helicopters to the communities in which they operate by providing aid to those in need.

An Orange County resident has been promoted to one-star general in the New York National Guard.
Isabel Rivera Smith, a Goshen resident and Iraq War veteran who started in the Army as a truck driver in 1985, has been promoted to brigadier general in the New York Army National Guard. Smith serves as the director of joint staff for the New York National Guard. She is responsible for state emergency operations, and missions involving both the New York Army and Air National Guard. Her awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal. Smith is also the recipient of the 2017 Latina Style Military Service Award. ....

A 36-year-old man who was fatally shot in California shortly after midnight Saturday has been identified as a Navy sailor who was originally from Louisiana, according to reports.
Ramone Joseph was still alive when police arrived outside his home in Chula Vista, near San Diego, around 12:25 a.m., KGTV-TV of San Diego reported. Joseph was transported to a hospital but was later pronounced dead, the report said.
Officers had been called to the neighborhood on reports of a shooting, the report said.
A short time earlier, police were called about a suspicious car in the area, KNSD-TV of San Diego reported. ....

CHULA VISTA, Calif. â A U.S. military service member was identified as the victim of a deadly shooting in a Chula Vista neighborhood over the weekend.
On Feb. 6, at around 12:25 a.m., Chula Vista police received a report regarding a suspicious vehicle. Moments later, police were called regarding shots fired in the same area.
Responding officers arrived to find 36-year-old Ramone Joseph injured and on the ground. ....
