Pro-build day brings surge of progress at Habitat for Humanity home

HANNIBAL — The rain on Saturday didn’t stop volunteer teams from getting trusses set up during the Pro-Build day for the new Mark Twain Area Habitat for Humanity home at 250 N. Hawkins Ave.
Mark Twain Area Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Committee Chairperson Kevin Knickerbocker said the decision to move ahead with the Pro-Build Day was made that morning. Teams of volunteers started before 8 a.m., and he thanked Chris Doyle and his crew from Doyle Construction Company for guiding the installation of the trusses to support the roof sheathing. There was a good turnout of 14-16 volunteers, and the trusses were installed in 2 1/2 hours before the rainfall increased. ....

A donation as big as a house

Many times people donate their time or money to organizations such as the Wexford Osceola Habitat for Humanity to aid in their mission.
Recently, a large donation was given to the non-profit organization, but it wasn t a donation of a person s time or money. It was a house. A family from southeast Michigan with roots in the region and who also has spent many summers on Lake Missaukee is donating the 1,250 square foot home with a two-car attached garage.
Wexford Osceola Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Amy Gibbs said the family decided to build their dream home on the property but wanted to do something with the existing home besides demolishing it. After some brainstorming, Gibbs said the family decided they wanted to bless another family by donating their existing home to Wexford Osceola Habitat for Humanity. ....

Sikhs for Humanity provide grocery hampers to struggling community members

EDMONTON
Every Saturday members of the Sikh community will provide free groceries to families in need.
The initiative originally got its start seven years ago handing out meals to more than 400 people.
However, due to COVID-19 the organization had to pivot once large gatherings were no longer permitted.
For the last six weeks volunteers have been packing grocery hampers every Friday with donated supplies.
On Saturdays, they set up a tent in front of Hope Mission in Sherwood Park and distribute the hampers to roughly 300 vehicles.
“It’s very simple, we don’t ask anyone their name or ID or anything like that,” Manjit Nerval a volunteer with Sikhs for Humanity, said.  ....
