BCC program to explore rural entrepreneurs Butler Community College’s Life Enrichment will host Ron Wilson at 9 a.m. March 2 Wilson will present “Ruralpreneurs: Tumbleweeds and Talents in Kansas Communities.” Ruralpreneurs are innovative entrepreneurs who built successful enterprises in small town Kansas. Wilson is director of the Huck Boyd Institute and his Kansas Profiles column is published by newspapers across the state including the Butler County Times Gazette This presentation highlights real-world examples of Kansas entrepreneurs who have built businesses and created jobs and opportunities in a rural setting. Additionally, this presentation honors the emerging role of diversity, technology, and telecommunications that have brought profound changes in society. ....
The Smithsonian Institution is helping to showcase the rural Kansas heritage. Through a series of in-person events, they are helping six Kansas communities showcase their people and culture. The traveling Smithsonian exhibition, Crossroads: Change in Rural America, has its next stop at the Volland Store in Alma. Small towns are overcoming challenges through innovative solutions. Volland s Deep Roots and New Growth in Wabaunsee County, offers a reflection on how this rural community has responded to change. In conjunction with the in-person display, this Alma location will offer creative, historical information about the Flint Hills, which has one of the largest surviving areas of native tallgrass prairie in North America, as well as the immigrants who settled in Wabaunsee County. ....
Thu, 02/04/2021 LAWRENCE – The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas will host a new exhibition, Voices from the Big First, 1961-1968, which will debut Feb. 11 in the Elizabeth Dole Gallery and Reading Room and remain on display until May 16. In conjunction with the exhibition, a series of afternoon programs on related topics will be livestreamed to the institute’s YouTube channel. Former U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, who worked with Dole in the 1960s, will be a featured guest for one of these programs. In 1961, Kansas, with the rest of the United States, found itself at a political, social and cultural crossroads. Featuring a selection of constituent letters written to then-congressman Dole from the collections of the Dole Archives, this original exhibition curated by Kansas history scholar Virgil Dean offers a window into the hopes and fears of everyday Kansans as they responded to change at home and conflict abroad. ....

January s book selection is Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth by Sarah Smarsh.
