SALT LAKE CITY The Utah System of Higher Education announced its choice for Southern Utah University s interim president, who will become the first woman to serve in that role at the school. Mindy Benson, current vice president of alumni and community relations for the university, will serve as president until the search for a new president concludes, which leaders anticipate will happen by spring of 2022. I am humbled and honored at the opportunity to serve in this leadership capacity at Southern Utah University, Benson said in a statement. I have a deep and abiding love for SUU. My father worked here, I earned my degrees here, I teach here, and I value the heritage that has established a solid foundation for our students and their promising futures. At their April 19 regular meeting, the Tama City Council voted 4-1 in favor of hosting a parade for the upcoming Lincoln Highway Bridge Festival on May 22. Council member Emily Babinat was lone no vote, citing safety concerns with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the likelihood of a large gathering occurring in the downtown area. The Tama Fire Department earlier announced their plans to host the carnival portion of the festival but the decision to host the parade fell to the city after the Tama-Toledo Chamber of Commerce said in March they were not planning to host the parade as had been done in recent years. ....
Black Hawk County Getting New Emergency Management Coordinator Black Hawk County has completed its search for a new emergency management coordinator. Mindy Benson will be taking has been named to replace Lorie Glover, who s retiring after 10 years. Benson will begin her duties as Black Hawk County s emergency management coordinator on March 22. Bensen has served as Tama County s Emergency Management Coordinator for the past seven years. She has been involved in communications, preparedness, providing resources to local first responders, and has assisted in providing training requests from local community groups and first responders during her 20-year career in public safety. “With her training, experiences, and hands-on responses, she has a great understanding of overall community and county preparedness” said Sheriff Tony Thompson, who serves as commission chairman. ....
