SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - As the cleanup of the troubled former Piney Point phosphate processing plant progresses, the problem remains What do you do with the millions of gallons of potentially toxic wastewater sitting in phosphogypsum stacks?
The Manatee County Commission on April 22 approved hiring Youngquist Brothers Inc. of Fort Myers to drill an injection well, to pump the wastewater thousands of feet below ground. The contract states the well must be completed with 330 days and cost no more than $9.35 million. ....

After the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity reviews the development request, Manatee Commission will decide whether development will be allowed east of boundary line.
A land amendment that would allow development beyond the Future Development Area Boundary line under limited circumstances in Manatee County was approved for transmittal by the Manatee County Commission on Thursday.
Transmitting the amendment does not mean it was approved by the Commission. The amendment will be submitted to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for review and comments. It will then come back before the Commission within 180 days of submitting the transmittal for a final vote. ....

Breach continues but evacuation orders lifted near Florida reservoir
Evacuation orders near a Tampa-area reservoir where there still is a breach have been lifted, officials said Tuesday.
Acting Manatee County Administrator Scott Hopes said the situation at the former Piney Point phosphate plant is “very much under control now.”
Water from the breach has been routed to an unused retention pond on site that has a liner in it, according to Hopes.
And around 34 million gallons a day are being moved as part of the controlled release through pumps, vacuum trucks and other methods, officials said.
Hopes said they have successfully released approximately 180 million gallons of water. ....
