BEMIDJI May marks Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States, and during the last year, the topic has been increasingly brought to the forefront due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Shannah Mulvihill, executive director of Mental Health Minnesota, said the public has become more aware of mental health issues in the last 12 months. Both the need for social isolation and the stress that has come with the pandemic contributed to the awareness. ....

Alison Yocom sobbed uncontrollably as she stumbled and collapsed on the living room floor of her south Minneapolis home.
For 10 days, Yocom had pleaded with hospital staff to admit her 17-year-old son to a psychiatric unit where he could receive treatment for his suicidal depression and anxiety. But for 10 days, she watched in frustration as he languished on a metal gurney in a windowless room of a hospital emergency room, where his condition worsened to the point that he threatened to kill himself.
Exasperated, Yocom wondered if he would ever receive the psychiatric care he needed.
I kept asking myself, Am I bad mom for taking him to the emergency room? Yocom said. He was getting sicker and sicker with each passing day. ....

Students who started babysitting and dog sitting for health care workers last spring have now spread the program statewide, while extra mental health support for essential workers has broadened to anyone struggling with stress.

CDC report: Minnesota mental health during COVID-19 better than many states, but residents still suffering
The CDC’s Household Pulse Survey found that less than 35 percent of Minnesotans suffered from those two conditions in the Jan. 6-18 survey period. By that measure, Minnesota was the most mentally stable state in the country, Wisconsin was third, and Mississippi was the least.
