1871  –City of Birmingham founded; now the state’s most populous city, Birmingham was founded at the crossing of two rail lines near one of the world’s richest deposits of minerals.
1873 Birmingham becomes seat of Jefferson County.
–First Colored Baptist Church founded.
Birmingham particularly hard hit by cholera due to the lack of urban infrastructure and the poor housing conditions. At least 128 people died from cholera, which struck in the height of summer and persisted for several weeks. The outbreak caused about half of Birmingham’s 4,000 residents to flee.
1874 – Birmingham Iron Age newspaper in publication.

With the crowds of A-Day weekend now more than two weeks in the past, a cooler approach is being taken toward ways of minimizing violence while keeping bar businesses alive.
From City Hall to barkeeps, almost all have said recently that productive discussions are taking place that would lead to appropriate solutions for mitigating crime while maintaining thriving entertainment areas.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - College football is coming back in a big way in Birmingham this fall. This week, the Birmingham City Council voted to bring the Morehouse-Tuskegee Classic to the Magic City for the first time, approving $500,000 in incentives and in-kind support.
The game has been played in Columbus, Georgia since the 1930s. Birmingham had planned to make a historic move by hosting the game last year before the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to cancel.    ....
