On the Water: Ups and downs of winter fishing in Southwest Florida By Capt. Bill Russell - | Jan 13, 2021 Dan Crain of Kentucky with a nice sheepshead he landed over the cool and windy weekend. He was fishing Matlacha Pass with Capt. Bill Russell. PHOTO PROVIDED This past week gave us winter fishing in Southwest Florida a cold front followed by several sunny days, and another cold front for the weekend. And, of course, some north wind and extreme low tides. Reports of red tide came from our southern areas, including waters around St. James City and the beaches from Sanibel south. Most of the area to the north from mid-Pine Island Sound and up, plus Matlacha Pass and Charlotte Harbor, appeared to be free of red tide effects. ....
On the Water: It’s looking like it’s time for holiday fishing By Capt. Bill Russell - | Dec 28, 2020 Like father like sons! Captain Tony Price spent a day on the water with his two boys Trey and Zack and they teamed up on a couple big gag grouper. December 18 fishing report from Byron Stout Reset Alex Henderson and his friend, Antulio, caught this uncommon fat snook Sunday in the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River. What made the even event rarer was . . . A second fat snook (Centropomus parallelus). The all-tackle record for fat snook is 10 pounds, 14 ounces, from Brazil. Florida doesn’t list a state record for fat snook, only common snook. Photos courtesy Lehr’s Economy Tackle. NC State junior Avery Bishop’s snook was one of 35 caught in four days of fishing last week in Blind Pass with his dad, Mark, and cousin. Bob Diersing reports Capt. Chris Foust’s redfish sniffed out his cut ladyfish bait in two feet of water at Foster’s Point, in Pine Island Sound. ....

December 11 fishing report from Byron Stout Reset Jeremy Rounding was offshore in Brandon Wilks’ flats skiff, chumming at night when this dandy blackfin tuna responded. It was one of a pair, plus a cooler full of big mangrove snapper. Char Mercer and Hannah Lane had a big time in Wiggins Pass catching mangrove snapper, including some keepers, Sunday with Char’s husband, Rick. This 27-inch mutton was one of many Will Kures and his family caught on cut thread herrings, 25 miles off Naples on the All In with Capt. Jim Rinckey. All In Capt. Kees Van Der Aa’s African pompano rounded out the box, which also included four snapper species and two big porgies, all delicious. ....
