Fifteen foreign ambassadors have signed an open letter on Istanbul Convention, urging Lithuania to ratify the document. LRT English is publishing their statement, in full.
Today is the 10th Anniversary of the Istanbul Convention. A powerful instrument, the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence was opened for signature on May 11, 2011 and entered into force on August 1, 2014.
It is the first instrument in Europe to set legally binding standards to prevent gender-based violence, protect victims of violence and punish perpetrators. Today, we reflect on what we have achieved so far and what challenges still lie ahead. ....

A Lithuanian lawmaker from the country’s ruling Homeland Union party has drawn widespread condemnation for the outrageous claim that Jews took part in the Holocaust.
In an opinion piece in the Lithuanian-language version of Russia’s Sputnik news site on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Valdas Rakutis said, “There was no shortage of Holocaust perpetrators among the Jews themselves, especially in the ghetto self-government structures. We must name these people out loud and do our best to ensure that there are no people like them again.”
Later Wednesday, Rakutis, who is also a historian, said he had sought to broaden the debate on collaborators in the Holocaust. ....

Lithuanian MP Valdas Rakutis from the ruling conservative Homeland Union party has drawn rebukes from ambassadors as well as fellow party members for his op-ed published on Wednesday, where he claimed that there was no shortage of Holocaust perpetrators among the Jews themselves .
The country’s foriegn minister and head of the party, Gabrielius Landsbergis, expressed outrage over Rakutis’ claims.
I [.] am very angry at the lack of adequacy and understanding, the minister said in a comment sent to BNS. The parliamentarian s opinion has nothing to do either with my position or with the principles that the party I represent or the government I work in adhere to. ....
