Memorial Day remembrance set for Monday

The historic Athens Cemetery is the scene of a Memorial Day program on Monday.
The Athens Cemetery Association invites everyone to the ceremony, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial, near the entrance to the grounds on South Prairieville Street.

nd District Court Judge Scott McKee will deliver the keynote address. McKee is a military veteran who was deployed overseas in Afghanistan. He has spoken at numerous events, such as the Veteran’s Day observance at the East Texas Arboretum and the Henderson County Peace Officers Memorial on the courthouse lawn. ....

An Eagle Scout’s project that placed a memorial in Monument’s town cemetery has stirred debate.

A memorial installed Oct. 3 at town-owned Monument Cemetery as part of an Eagle Scout’s project drew criticism from local residents, who asked the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) to seek its removal.
Since MRFF urged the town by letter last month to remove the memorial or the religious language and imagery that refers to a specific religion — Christianity — Americans United for Separation of Church and State has joined the campaign.
The monument, funded largely by donations through the VFW Foundation, was made possible through efforts of Boy Scout Michael Carlson, aided by other Scouts and leaders of Boy Scout Troop 8 of St. Matthias Episcopal Church, according to ....

Black home ownership and promise of reparations in Asheville NC


Priscilla Ndiaye Robinson looked across the empty fields where her Southside neighborhood once thrived. “It’s all gone,” she said. “One thousand two hundred businesses and homes were lost.” 
The neighborhood, where approximately half of Asheville’s Black population lived, suffered major upheaval under Asheville’s urban renewal program in the 1970s and 1980s, one of the largest urban renewal projects in the Southeastern United States. 
Ndiaye Robinson’s memories of childhood delights a neighbor’s cupcakes, playing with chickens, charging up the grassy hills are tainted by sadness and umbrage at what happened. “It broke up a loving community. It tore up families,” she recalled. ....
