Worth County man sentenced for near head-on crash with sheriff's deputy

NORTHWOOD, Iowa – A Kensett man is sentenced for a near head-on collision with law enforcement.
Derek Kevin Christensen, 34, pleaded guilty to one count of eluding-speed over 25 over the limit and was ordered Monday to pay a $625 fine. Christensen was also given seven days in jail but credit for seven days already served.
The Worth County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were responding to a domestic abuse call on August 30, 2020, when they saw Christensen approaching at a high rate of speed. The Sheriff’s Office says there was a near collision at Killdeer and 410th Street and Christensen then drove through a yard before hitting a patrol car at Killdeer and 430th Street. ....

A Minnesota man has died in a one-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning in northern Iowa.
The Iowa State Patrol says 26-year-old Mohamud Ahmed Mohamud of Saint Paul was killed when the vehicle he was driving southbound on Interstate 35 left the roadway for an unknown reason just before 4 a.m. Mohamud’s vehicle struck the cable barriers at around mile marker 203 before colliding with a concrete bridge pillar.
Mohamud was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident remains under investigation. The Worth County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa DOT, and the Hanlontown, Fertile and Mason City fire departments also assisted at the scene. ....

A Minnesota woman is in custody after leading law enforcement on a vehicle chase in North Iowa Monday.
The Worth County Sheriff’s Office arrested 37-year-old Jannifer Miller of Owatonna for eluding a law enforcement vehicle after a deputy tried to pull her over in Northwood. Miller instead sped away and during the pursuit throughout the town, court records show Miller reached speeds of 60 miles per hour in 25 mile per hour zones. At one point she also drove through a residential yard.
Authorities say Miller was finally stopped and she and a male passenger were arrested at gunpoint. Court documents state Miller drove through at least six stop signs while trying to evade law enforcement. ....
