Image: 123rf.com The Covid-19 pandemic raised the bar for teachers everywhere, but the challenges were even greater for children with special needs and disabilities. Getting specialist support to these children during the lockdown became a major challenge, especially as the majority were from poorer households with limited access to computers and other crucial technology to remain in touch and on top of their curricula. Provincial education departments, organisations, schools and teachers must be applauded for quickly creating and adapting teaching and learning materials so that pupils could complete the syllabus in their homes while the country was in lockdown. ....

MTN launches AirFibre in South Africa Subscribe Telecommunications company MTN says it will begin its first commercial installation of Supersonic AirFibre on Monday (3 May). Since the announcement of the launch of the solution in February this year, the group said it has received over 20,000 expressions of interest, with the aim to connect 60,000 homes within the first year. This coincides with a surge in demand for affordable, fibre-like internet access in previously unreachable areas, the group said. The first commercial rollout will commence in Soweto, Mamelodi, Fairlands and Honeydew. Calvin Collett, managing director of MTN SA’s ISP: Supersonic said that AirFibre serves as an alternative to the labour-intensive rollout of cabled fibre, by using MTN’s existing reception network. ....

In April, Nigeria’s telecommunications regulator lifted a freeze on the registration of new subscribers by telecom operators, including MTN, that had been in place since December as the country approved new SIM guidelines. .. ....
