A1A, All-American Road, Navigates Between Quaint and Crass

A storied road even before it was known as A1A, the oceanshore stretch from St. Johns through Flagler County is now an All-American Road, only the second such designation of a road in Florida. (© FlaglerLive)
State Road A1A, or at least the region surrounding it even before it took on that relatively recent name, has always had a primordial place in Florida. Originally published in 1939, the WPA guide to Florida devotes its very first tour, out of 22 in the book, to the 102 miles between Jacksonville Beach and Daytona Beach, on what were then State Roads 78 and 140, the previous designations for A1A. The guide described the roads as “hard surfaced roadbed except for occasional short stretches of shell road; watch for cattle and sand drifts.” ....

Danielle Dougherty has recently opened up for business at her new stallion breeding and mare care facility in Citra, Fla.
Located on 65 lush acres in Marion County, Stormborne Stallions is home to Backtalk, Finale, Rogueish, Matanzas Inlet, and Young Brian.
“I am very excited about our new location and opening up the stallion shed in 2021,” Dougherty said. “Our facilities are ideal for the upcoming season with a 24-stall barn for the stallions and a separate wing set up for foaling and mare care.”
Dougherty, who has spent her career working with racehorses and stallions, also offers the services of mare care, sales prep, and foaling at her new facilities. ....

After witnessing several boats and jet skis approaching a mother and calf pair of whales off Matanzas Inlet this past Sunday afternoon, I realized there s a gap in public knowledge regarding regulations relating to approaching whales.
It is illegal to approach North Atlantic Right Whales closer than 500 yards.
This regulation applies to anyone and everyone without a federally issued permit and includes boaters, paddlers, surfers, swimmers, drone operators and aircraft.
If you disregard the federal regulations governing such activity, as prescribed by the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act , you open yourself up to law enforcement action from local, state and federal authorities. Maximum penalties are fines up to $100,000, as much as one year in jail and confiscation of your vessel. ....
