Tribal Councilor Duncan shares memories of picking wild onions

SPADE MOUNTAIN – For Tribal Councilor Canaan Duncan, wild onions have been a long-standing tradition in his family.  “Some of my first memories was, you know, we would load up and my dad, at the time, he had a, I still remember, it was a green Chevy extended cab. We’d jump in there, me, mom, dad, brother, and we’d drive up on top of Spade Mountain park in the ditch and pick onions for about two or three hours, and we did that every spring” Duncan said.  Like other Cherokee people, Duncan was raised learning how to hunt, fish and forage for food. These are traditions that have been kept alive and passed down throughout generations.
