Solon calls for joint RP-US naval war games as China plans to occupy more areas in West PH Sea

Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel on Friday called for joint naval war games between the Philippines and the United States, and the signing of a new “Manila Declaration”, strongly renewing the allegiance of the two countries to the 1951 RP-US Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT).
“We should have another Manila Declaration, considering China’s plan to occupy more areas in the West Philippine Sea that are clearly within our 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone,” Pimentel, House Strategic Intelligence Committee chairperson, said on Friday, April 8, which was also ‘’Araw ng Kagitingan’’.
In the Senate, the MDT is an untapped weapon in the arsenal of the Philippines to prevent our fish within the RP Exclusive Economic Zone (EZZ) from being stolen, Senator Panfilo M. Lacson, chairman of the Senate Committee on National Defense, said. ....

Delegations Differ over Sanctions amid Growing Concerns over Humanitarian Impact, as Special Committee on United Nations Charter Begins 2021 Session
Amid growing concerns over unilateral coercive measures and their unintended humanitarian consequences, several delegations stressed today that sanctions remain a relevant tool for the maintenance of international peace and security, as the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization opened its 2021 session.
Throughout the opening of the session - set to run until 24 February - delegates agreed that the Special Committee plays a central role in the promotion of international stability. However, a number of proposals brought to a head concerns over duplication of work within the United Nations, most notably as speakers addressed discussions on the use of force against terrorist groups. ....

Apart from earning foreign exchange, the tourism industry has a bearing on poverty alleviation, employment, income generation, development of the local economy, etc. The Manila Declaration on World Tourism of 1980 recognised its importance as “an activity essential to the life of nations because of its direct effects on the social, cultural, educational and economic sectors of national societies and their international relations.” Tourism has been recognised as an economic powerhouse that promotes direct and indirect employment opportunities where both men and women can work (UNWTO, 2013).
Most of the developing countries have problems of lack of tourism infrastructure, marketing, awareness about the benefits of tourism, convergence between government, NGOs and private players. Pro-poor tourism strategies can be applied to benefit the poor as well as to boost local economic development in ways that benefit the poor. ....
