Bail Granted to Rape-Accused NPP MLA from Meghalaya

Shillong:
A lower court has granted anticipatory bail to National People s Party (NPP) MLA Thomas Sangma, who is accused of rape.
Sangma was given bail on the condition that he not go missing or leave the state without notice. He was also instructed to keep his distance from the victim.
An FIR was filed against the MLA earlier this week under IPC sections 376 for rape and 506 for criminal intimidation for allegedly raping the woman on many occasions.
He has been raping me on the pretext of getting married from January 2020 till 17 April 2021, the victim stated.
According to the victim, she and a friend were invited to the Magnum hotel in Shillong early last year. Sangma offered them a drink, at which point she dropped unconscious. ....

With 47 Vacancies, Dearth of Nurses at Pelican Bay State Prison Lead To 16-Hour Shifts, Extra Work For Those Who Stay

Though the state has embarked on a recruitment campaign, a shortage of nurses at Pelican Bay State Prison has led to a toxic environment of harassment, retaliation and disciplinary action, according to a union representative.
With 47 open nursing positions at the prison, members of the skeleton crew that’s left are often asked to work 16 hours a day or are covering the work of two or three people during one eight-hour shift, said Laura Slavec, local SEIU district bargaining unit representative and registered dental assistant at Pelican Bay. ....

Despite its progressive branding, New York State is home to the notorious 24-hour workdays, in which home attendants – most of them immigrants and women of color – work 24-hour shifts taking care of seriously-ill seniors and people with disabilities with needs for around-the-clock care. These shifts have taken a toll on the workers’ health and on their family relations, while imposing safety risks to those they take care of, as such grueling overwork makes it impossible for workers to provide the best care. The insurance companies have benefited from the 24-hour workdays by paying workers only 13 hours of pay.
Many home agencies have been forcing 24-hour shifts on the workers, but disguise them as ‘choice’. ....
