UK sky lantern approach significantly out of date , NFU warns 9 May 2021 | Sky lanterns start wildfires and property fires, kill or injure livestock, as well as pollute the countryside The NFU has written to the government as part of a coalition of 18 organisations to explain how its approach to sky lanterns is now significantly out of date . The farming union is calling on Environment Minister Rebecca Pow to act now to make the use of sky lanterns illegal. The letter details how in other countries the release of sky lanterns is considered a crime due to the harm they cause animals, habitats and the countryside. ....
Sea Shepherd is excited to present the Sea Eagle, the latest addition to their fleet of marine conservation vessels known as Neptune’s Navy. The new ship was purchased through funding from Allianz SE, Allianz Technology, and Allianz Italy as part of Sea Shepherd’s new two-year partnership with Allianz to address the issue of plastic marine debris polluting the ocean. “ Sea Shepherd is very excited about this new relationship, which will help us to spread the message that fishing gear is one of the main causes of ocean pollution,” says Sea Shepherd Global CEO Captain Alex Cornelissen. “ This new vessel will be dedicated almost exclusively to our work in the Mediterranean Sea, both as a huge improvement for our existing campaigns like Operation Siso, as well as the perfect vessel to start exciting new campaigns.” ....
Marine Conservation Society unveils new strategy, brand and website Published 1 month ago The Marine Conservation Society has unveiled a refreshed strategy – an action plan for healthy seas – highlighting the charity’s work towards a better protected, cleaner and healthier ocean, for everyone. The strategy pulls together the charity’s yearlong project exploring its values, tone of voice and visual representation, resulting in a new brand, website and refocused mission. Sandy Luk, CEO of the Marine Conservation Society: “ We’re facing an ocean emergency; the ocean is in poor health because of human activity. We’re polluting our waters and destroying precious habitats, not only harming the species that live in our seas, but reducing the ocean’s ability to help us fight the climate crisis. Government proposals to ban damaging fishing in Dogger Bank could be a first step to the recovery of a rich array of wildlife, conservationists have said. Under proposed bye-laws put out for consultation by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) on Monday, bottom trawling would be prohibited in four English offshore marine protected areas, including Dogger Bank. Campaigners said the move to properly protect the conservation areas would help preserve important habitats such as sandbanks, coral gardens and reefs and the wildlife they support, and boost fish stocks. But they warned that properly conserving four marine protected areas was just the “tip of the iceberg” in the scale of the challenge to reverse declines in marine wildlife, and called for more urgent action. ....
