School Board Plans Feb. 2 Vote on Reopening Classrooms

The School Board on Tuesday was briefed on the details of the latest proposal to return students to class on a part-time basis. With a formal vote scheduled for Feb. 2, it is expected that students will return to hybrid learning no later than Feb. 16. 
Interim SuperintendentScott A. Ziegler said his staff if ready to resume in-person learning for the students who have selected that option.
In-person learning was suspended just before the winter break in December because of increasing levels of community spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.
As caseloads begin to decline following the expected post-holiday spike and state and national leaders press for schools to reopen,Ziegler presentednew strategies to evaluate health risks measurements that will allow in-person classes to resume unless there are on-campus outbreaks. The strategy is based on new recommendations from the Virginia Department of Education that put the emphasis efforts by school staff ....

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced on Thursday that the state is shifting gears in regards to opening schools.
RICHMOND, Va. (FOX 5 DC) - Virginia Governor Ralph Northam says the state is switching gears when it comes to re-opening schools in the midst of the pandemic.
On Thursday, the Governor announced that schools will no longer operate under the assumption that they should stay closed while the novel coronavirus surges, they will operate under the mandate that schools need to be open, and here are the ways they can do that safely. ....

At the start of this month, all Loudoun County Public Schools students up through grade 5 were eligible to return to the classroom part-time within the school system’s staged hybrid learning implementation plan. Now, LCPS administration is finalizing its preparations to welcome middle- and high-school students back into facilities, though rising COVID-19 infection rates loom more ominously by the day.
Loudoun students between grades 6 and 12 are scheduled to begin hybrid learning Jan. 21, the first day of the spring semester, unless their parents prefer they continue entirely virtual learning. This step — the fourth and final stage of hybrid implementation — will come on the tail of intense preparation efforts by both school-level and senior administrators, rendered even trickier by the staggered nature of secondary school schedules. ....
