Families of nursing home residents considering legal action over 'ban' on window visits


RELATIVES of nursing home residents are considering legal action over the denial of so-called window visits by some operators of long-term care facilities.
Window visiting is where a visitor stands outside and speaks to a resident at safe distance through an open window or by telephone.
Majella Beattie from advocacy group Care Champions said families are talking to human rights solicitors as a last resort after repeated attempts to get access to loved ones.
Window visits are permitted under all levels of lockdown, she said.
But we have been inundated with reports from families that they are not getting this access. ....

Call for family communication supports in nursing homes


An association representing social workers is calling for Health Service Executive social workers to be part of Covid-19 response teams deployed to overwhelmed nursing homes, in order to assist communications with families.
The Irish Association of Social Workers (IASW) said this is essential because families of some residents have experienced communication breakdown with nursing homes as their loved ones died during the pandemic.
IASW s Sinead McGarry said working as part of the outbreak team, social workers would act as crisis support and communication liaisons for families and nursing home residents.
HSE social workers could be facilitated through temporary deployment that public nursing homes did this successfully during the pandemic s first and thirds waves, she added. ....

HSE warns nursing homes some residents not suitable for vaccine 
The HSE has written to nursing homes reminding them each resident must be assessed before getting the current Covid-19 vaccine 
The HSE letter highlights the need to delay the jab for anyone who has a fever or other temporary illness.

The HSE has written to nursing homes highlighting possible risks to frail, elderly people from the vaccine and stating some people may not be suitable vaccine candidates.
The letter, signed by HSE Chief Clinical Officer Dr Colm Henry, was circulated on Sunday to nursing homes and some homes forwarded the letter to families. ....
