Mangas Colorados, the great chief of the Membreno Apache, had been friendly with the Americans since 1846 when he offered to join them in their war with Mexico. But since the humiliating whipping given him by the miners at Pinos Altos and the betrayal of his son-in-law Cochise by the Army at Apache Pass in early 1861, he had declared war on the miners and settlers.
