Fairfax County Proposes Real Estate Tax Decrease in Limited New Budget

February 24, 2021 at 9:45am
Fairfax County is considering lowering its real estate tax rate by one cent for the next fiscal year in an attempt to give relief to homeowners during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
County Executive Bryan Hill presented the proposal to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors yesterday (Tuesday) as part of an advertised Fiscal Year 2022 budget that illustrated how the pandemic has curtailed the county’s ability to fund top priorities, from education and employee pay to affordable housing and environmental initiatives.
According to Hill, the county’s residential real estate market has been “very strong” over the past year with 88% of residential properties seeing an increase in assessed value, but that also places a greater burden on homeowners at a time when unemployment is up and many people are struggling to pay their bills. ....

Fairfax prosecutor presses case for more changes

Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano approves of criminal-justice changes enacted in 2020, but said more needs to be done.
The reforms aim to reduce mass incarceration and racial and economic inequities in the criminal-justice system while maintaining community safety, Descano told the McLean Citizens Association in a Dec. 16 virtual meeting.
Descano, a Democrat, said he was “really excited” that Fairfax County police by the end of 2021 almost fully will implement a body-worn-camera program, providing cameras to about 1,200 officers.
“I really do feel that body-worn cameras are essential to creating trust in the community,” he said. “They are a great tool for evidence, they are a great tool for police accountability, and quite frankly, they’re also in many ways a tool to make sure our police aren’t being accused of things that they did not do.” ....

Veteran, spy, public servant: Armand Weiss of McLean dies at 89

From covert intelligence operations and governmental logistics work to authoring and editing publications and serving myriad organizations, McLean resident Armand Weiss accomplished much in his nearly 90-year-long life.
Weiss, 89, who died Nov. 27 at his home after several health setbacks, was a “truly amazing, unique individual and he will be sorely missed,” said Supervisor John Foust (D-Dranesville) during the Board of Supervisors’ Dec. 1 meeting.
“He was very active in the community and was a great citizen and a good friend to us all,” said Robert Jackson, president of the McLean Citizens Association, for which Weiss at one time served as second vice president. ....
