There were a few fiscal surprises in the first quarter of 2021 with the City of Timmins being in a “favourable position” heading into the final nine months of the year.
That was the message delivered by Natalie Moore, the city’s treasurer and director of finance and treasurer, during last Tuesday’s council meeting.

Moore explained Tuesday’s presentation dealt with Fund 1, which is the taxation fund.
“In the first part of the report we highlighted some announcements that came out during the first quarter, so I will just touch on them quickly,” she said.

Chelmsford-based Belanger Construction Inc. was awarded a pair of contracts during Tuesday’s city council meeting.
The first, in the amount of $3,895,342.50, plus HST, is for the extension of St. Jean Avenue, from McBride Street 400 metres west toward Government Road.

“This street extension will allow for the development of 11 industrial lots that will be sold for future development,” said Patrick Seguin, the City of Timmins’ director of Public Works and Engineering.
“I believe three are already sold and we have started some of the industrial lots off of McBride Street. That’s underway already.

Syracuse University’s Steam Station hasn’t always been a good neighbor, according to David Rufus.
Since 1926, SU’s Steam Station has towered over the corner of McBride and Taylor streets. Pioneer Homes, one of the oldest public housing communities in the U.S., is just across the street. The station borders Interstate 81, which destroyed and displaced a predominantly Black community when it was built in 1959 and continues to negatively affect residents today.
