Indonesia has named an evangelical Christian as the new national police chief, marking the first time in nearly 50 years that a member of the religious minority has held the post in the Muslim-majority nation.
According to UCA News, Commissioner General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, 52, was sworn in on Jan. 27 as police chief, succeeding Gen. Idham Azis who retired on Feb.1. A Protestant, Listyo is the first Christian to hold the post in nearly 50 years and only the third since Indonesia declared independence in August 1945. ....

A Christian to head the Indonesian National Police

After more than 40 years, a Christian has been appointed as head of the Indonesian National Police. General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, who was sworn in today at a ceremony led by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, replaces General Idham Azis, who has retired.
Prabowo, a 51-year-old Protestant, was promoted to the top post of the police after heading the Criminal Investigation Agency (
Bareskrim).
He was President Jokowi’s only candidate, and his appointment was unanimously approved on January 20 by the People s Representative Council, Indonesia’s lower house of parliament.
The super policeman also received the support of leading Muslim organisations and Islamic clerics in Banten, the province bordering the capital known for its religious conservatism, where he led the local police. ....

A senior Indonesian lawmaker says it is impossible for his country to recognize Israel and normalize diplomatic ties with the occupying regime, after reports said Washington has offered a further aid of up to $2 billion to Jakarta if it forges ties with Tel Aviv.
“The situation of the Palestinian issue is getting worse due to the blind bias of the United States towards Israel, and its disregard for the rights of Palestinian people.
