In an article on the high cost of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods published last week, Auto Express magazine reported that Wiltshire Council spent £412,000 on the project in the city centre, which began on Wednesday, October 21 last year. The magazine goes on to say that out of that total, £250,622 went on “consultancy and monitoring” fees, £64,800 was spent on the low traffic zone s construction, £92,250 worth of enforcement cameras were installed, and changes to road signage cost £4,328. It then reports that Wiltshire Council spent a further £10,000-£15,000 suspending the scheme indefinitely. When the Journal put these figures - later reported by The Times - to Wiltshire Council, it said the costs incurred for the project have been met by the Swindon and Wiltshire (SWLEP) funding, but would not confirm or deny if the numbers were correct. ....
SALISBURY looks likely to miss out on more than a million pounds of funding, which had been set aside to improve car parks, cycling options and more in the city. A low traffic zone and experimental traffic order limiting vehicle movements in the city centre was suspended, after businesses and council leaders withdrew support for the People Friendly Streets plan last year. But the city s MP, John Glen, has called for a grant of £1.3 million from the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership (SWLEP) to be spent as planned. The money had been set aside for complementary measures linked to - but separate from - the rest of the People Friendly scheme. ....

It comes after the chief executive officer of the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership, Paddy Bradley - who are contributing £1.3m - told Paddy Bradley said: The money had to be spent by March 2021, and as Wiltshire Council said the scheme would be indefinitely suspended , the SWLEP board had to take a view on what to do with the money. We took the view that this meant the scheme would not be returning before March, and therefore the money needed to be reallocated. ....

Wiltshire Council will consider reinstating People Friendly Scheme in new year WILTSHIRE Council has said it will consider reinstating the People Friendly Streets scheme in Salisbury in the new year. Councillor Bridget Wayman, Cabinet Member for Highways, said the council is pleased that Salisbury City Council has debated and agreed a motion on this important scheme , and that it continues to support it . She adds that People Friendly Salisbury is a key part of the Salisbury Central Area Framework (CAF), a range of projects that aim to deliver an exciting and vibrant city centre well into the future . During the extraordinary meeting last night, Cllr Mark McClelland said he would not be supporting the motion, and that he does not recognise the link between the scheme and the CAF. ....
