The Palaszczuk Government has put marine waste squarely in its sights with $1 million in grants to help community groups across the state keep local waters litter-free – funding able to be delivered because of the ongoing health response and rollout of Queensland’s COVID-19 economic recovery plan.

Boatie flown to hospital after near-drowning off Mackay

CPR skills have saved the life of a boatie who almost drowned off an island east of Mackay.
An RACQ CQ Rescue spokeswoman said a helicopter crew attended the scene near Penrith Island in the South Cumberland Islands National Park, 75km from Mackay, on Friday afternoon.
The spokeswoman said a person in their 40s had spent the day spearfishing and diving when the shallow near drowning incident occurred.
She said there were four other people aboard the boat including two children.

104yo WWII veteran returns home for Anzac Day

At 104 years of age, William ‘Bill’ Bruce is flying across Queensland today so he can make the Anzac Day services in a small outback town.
The veteran has only ever missed one service in Nebo, about 90km from Mackay, when COVID-19 kept him in Caboolture last year.
Mr Bruce is the last of the Nebo “boys” left who signed up to fight in World War II and he could very well be the oldest surviving veteran in the wider Mackay Whitsunday Isaac region.
He enlisted in 1942 to protect the mainland from the Japanese; but then he became a member of the Australian Electrical Mechanical Engineers in the 2/137th Australian Brigade Workshop and was deployed to New Guinea. ....
