Share to Jan 19, 2021 4:17 PM Pete McIntyre Kelowna council considered a rezoning request and Official Community Plan amendment to redevelop several lots on the corner of Leathead and Fraser Roads in Rutland at its meeting Monday. The proposal is for a 16-unit row housing development including two-bedroom and three-bedroom units. Council gave first reading to the proposed rezoning and OCP amendment and forwarded the project to a February 2 public hearing. Here are other highlights from council’s Jan. 18 meeting: Benvoulin Heritage Park Council OK’d a request by the Central Okanagan Heritage Society to designate Benvoulin Heritage Park including McIver House, Reid Hall, and the park as a municipal heritage site for long-term protection. ....

The Central Okanagan Heritage Society is asking city council to have the entire 1.26-acre Benvoulin Heritage Park and all its buildings formally designated as a heritage site. Right now, only the church carries that classification. “We are just doing everything we can to make sure that building carries on forever, ideally,” society president Don Knox told iNFOnews.ca. There are about 200 buildings on Kelowna’s Heritage Registry but that does little to protect them from being modified or even demolished. ....
