Bowers, Spradley sworn in for New Braunfels City Council seats

Harry Bowers and Lawrence Spradley were sworn to new three-year terms on New Braunfels City Council, which Monday night bade farewell to retiring Councilmember Matthew Hoyt, who stepped down after delivering the meeting invocation.
Bowers, the District 3 incumbent, was joined by wife Katherine, son Quint and daughter Beth as he took the oath from County Court at-Law No. 3 Judge Deborah Linnartz Wigington. Spradley, who succeeded Hoyt as District 4 representative, was joined by wife Kristy as he recited his oath from retired Brazoria County Justice of the Peace Wayne Dubose.
Bowers, a 47-year-old Texas State University lecturer who won his first term unopposed in 2018, defeated challenger Kevin Robles, a 39-year-old businessman, totaling 1,027 votes (84.25%) to Roblesâ 192 votes (15.75%) in what Bowers said was the largest ever margin for a contested District 3 race and the second-largest winning margin ever for a council position. ....

Lane sworn in as New Braunfels police chief

New Braunfels has a new police chief after city council members unanimously confirmed the appointment of Keith Lane to the post during its Monday meeting.
The selection of Lane, who had been serving in an interim capacity since late last year, comes following a nationwide search by the city, assisted by the Keller-based executive recruitment firm of Strategic Government Resources.
A field of 62 candidates from 15 states â including 35 from Texas â was narrowed down to four finalists who visited New Braunfels this week for in-person interviews and tours of the community and meetings with officers and employees at the police department, according to City Manager Robert Camareno. ....

Election canvassing, police chief swearing-in on agenda

Mondayâs New Braunfels City Council meeting will feature some housekeeping items from the May 1 election and the swearing-in of the cityâs next police chief.
Council members are expected to canvass the election of two members of the council, which would make the results official.
Incumbent Harry Bowers and Lawrence Spradley captured races for council seats representing districts 3 and 4, respectively.
According to unofficial results, Bowers defeated challenger Kevin Robles, with 1,027 votes (84.25%) to Roblesâ 192 votes (15.75%). Spradley defeated Joy Harvey, 522 votes to 475, or 52.36% to 47.64%.
Council members will also canvass the results of the special election, where all 18 proposed city charter amendments were approved by voters. ....

âWhen people asked if I needed an umbrella I just told them that it didnât bother me â Iâm an old retired Army guy,â said Spradley, who defeated Joy Harvey by 47 votes to win in his first try at elective office.
Others scoring big wins Saturday included District 3 Council Member Harry Bowers, who coasted to an easy reelection victory, Steve Minus, who will succeed four-term retiring incumbent Sherry Harrison as New Braunfels ISDâs District 5 trustee, and Courtney Biasatti, who defeated District 2 Trustee and Comal ISD board President David Drastata, who was seeking a fifth term.
All 18 city charter propositions also passed in unofficial election totals, which indicated 3,269 voters, or 3.89% of 84,034 eligible, participated in at least one of Comal Countyâs five elections, which also included city council races in Garden Ridge and Bulverde. ....
