“The type of housing being provided here is necessary,” Planning Board Chair Brandon Mazer said. “We are not seeing a ton of family housing in general coming in. We are seeing a lot of studios and one-bedrooms, so this is really meeting some of our need.” ....

The message from a nurse who recovered from Covid and got the vaccine: 'Bear down and follow the rules'

Tina Black knows the horrors of Covid-19 better than most.
The licensed practical nurse has held the hands of seven of her favorite patients who died from the virus in the Covid unit at Schoellkopf Health Center, a nursing home in Niagara Falls.
She tested positive for the virus herself in the spring, experienced terrible headaches, and had to quarantine for four weeks in her bedroom, while taking precautions to avoid infecting her 16-year-old grandson who lives with her.
We now have a glimmer of hope, she said.
Black said she wasn t anxious about getting immunized against the virus.
I just know I wanted something to give to stop the deaths. That was really my main concern. I didn’t want to make any more phone calls saying there is a change in condition. I didn’t want to see any more pain and suffering. Not only in the nursing home, but in the world. ....

Covid-19 deaths of 1,000 Erie County residents tell a human story of isolation and grief

Mary Posch decorated for Christmas. She knew that if her husband came home from the hospital, he would welcome the sight.
Donald Posch had been baking Christmas cookies with his wife, Mary, in early November when the two of them initially came down with cold-like symptoms. By mid-month, Posch had stopped eating and was barely drinking.
But he never got out. Instead, hours before he died in Kenmore Mercy Hospital, she was finally allowed at his bedside and told her partner of more than 30 years what she knew he needed to hear.
Don, she said, if you re ready to go, I will be fine. ....
