Legislature sources said Patole handed over his resignation to deputy speaker Narhari Zhirwal. Patole, the MLA from Sakoli in Bhandara district, is likely to replace revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat as state Congress president soon, according to party sources. The Congress shares power with the Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party in Maharashtra. A delegation of Congress ministers, headed by Thorat, had recently met the party leadership in Delhi.

Thackeray flew in from Mumbai in the afternoon and met parents of the babies who died in the fire on Saturday. He also spoke to hospital and health officials. The chief minister told reporters that he met the kin of the victims with folded hands. I could not find words to console them, he said. The probe we have announced will also check if the fire was an accident or something which happened as a result of ignoring earlier safety report, Thackeray said.

Mr. Thackeray visited Bhandara on Sunday and met with the grief-stricken parents who lost their babies in the accident which occurred on the wee hours of Saturday. He also spoke with hospital and health officials in the district, which is part of the State’s Vidarbha region.
