Former Montana Governor Stan Stephens Passed Away (1929-2021)
From Aaron Flint:
He was almost too nice of a guy to be governor. That s how former State Senator John Brenden (R-Scobey) described the late Montana Gov. Stan Stephens. This, after news began to circulate over the weekend that Stephens had passed away.
Stan Stephens was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He moved to Montana when he was 19. He had a 38-year career in broadcasting that included service with the U.S. Armed Forces Broadcast Network during the Korean War. In 1975, he earned the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award for journalistic excellence in editorials for uncovering a scandal in the Montana Workers’ Compensation Program. He began his political career in 1969 with his election to the Montana State Senate. In his 16-year tenure, he served as floor whip, majority leader, and senate president. In 1986 he was recognized by the National Republican Legislators’ Association as one of the country’ ....

Book Review: Grounded by Jon Tester
Senator Tester s memoir could become a helpful roadmap for coastal Democrats fighting for rural votes. The question is: will they pick it up and read it?

Democratic Senator Jon Tester of Montana got little fanfare from the press when he published his memoir,
Grounded, in September 2020.  Only the
I can see why national media wouldn’t rush to do puff pieces on a self-serving book, which all memoirs are, of course, if only in their aim of selling books.  More so political memoirs, even when there’s no reason to believe Tester is planning a presidential run.  Indeed, at age 64 and with four years left in his third Senate term, it’s not at all clear Tester will again run for anything.   ....

The Montana Constitution dictates that the legislature meet only on odd numbered years, and for 90-day periods. However, the Legislature did meet annually from 1973 to 1975. The primary work of the legislature at these times is to pass a biannual budget that must then be approved by the Governor.
Montana has a Republican state government trifecta. A trifecta exists when one political party simultaneously holds the governor’s office and majorities in both state legislative chambers. As of April 7, 2021, there are 23 Republican trifectas, 15 Democratic trifectas, and 12 divided governments where neither party holds trifecta control. ....
