By Kristy Dorsey Though upbeat about the quality of investment opportunities across the Scottish business landscape, Jackie Waring of Investing Women (IW) is also a bit frustrated. While her group has agreed several deals in recent months, most of them remain under wraps for the time being, making it difficult to drill down into detailed activity. “We have done a pile of investment recently, but for various reasons people are holding back and saying no, let’s not say anything about that yet,” she explains. There’s currently £80,000 in the pipeline for a female-founded technology company working in the music sector, while another deal was recently completed to support a film and media venture whose technology will increase the diversity of content in that sector. Ms Waring believes the creative industries represent a “big growth” area.
CERYS MATTHEWS: I think the word poetry can limit your idea of what poetry is. It is just like music, It is not just one thing. that only the elite or educated can access or identify with. There is no need for prejudice, no need for fear. I say this because I so often heard: “Well the last time I did poetry was in school and I hated it.” Don’t think of it like that!
If you are brought up in a culture where it is alive and well – in hymns, in children’s lullabies – and there are so many cultures where it is alive, it is not just the equivalent in music of Wagner. There is a whole spectrum that exists in poetry. You’ve got the equivalent of “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” or “The Birdy Song”. You do have your John Cooper Clarkes, you’ve got side splitting hilarious poetry and limericks. It is Allen Ginsberg, it’s Little Piggy Went to Market ! It’s the Beatles, it’s Kylie Minogue!

John Pilgrim, who has died aged 87, achieved fame, if not fortune, as the washboard player with the Vipers during the brief mid-50s skiffle craze. The Vipers were among the most popular and exciting of British skiffle groups, and, as the first resident band at the 2i’s coffee bar in Soho, London, helped set the ball rolling for British rock’n’roll, with many early stars emerging from the 2i’s cellar. They toured widely and had chart success, notably with Don’t You Rock Me Daddy-O, released on Parlophone in 1957, which reached No 10, and then with Cumberland Gap and Streamline Train.
