All of the production lines at the Subaru plant in Gunma, Japan, where they make the 2021 Subaru Forester, resume entire operations today, May 10. The shutdowns were due to a global shortage of semiconductors.
A new report from Automotive News says because microchips are used for high-end features on vehicles like the Outback and Forester, some features could go missing. Subaru uses microchips for its EyeSight blind-spot monitors, tablet-style touchscreens, navigation, digital rearview mirror, and sensors that apply the brakes before a driver backs into a car in a parking lot. ....

Subaru Restarts U.S. Plant - What It Means For The All-New Outback Wilderness

Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) is scheduled to resume production today, May 3, after the automaker suspended production from April 19 to April 26 (a total of 10 days). The plant manufactures the Subaru Outback, Ascent, Impreza, and Legacy models. Subaru is scheduled to begin producing the 2022 Outback models this spring, and the all-new 2022 Outback Wilderness trim.
Earlier this year, production at the U.S. plant was suspended for six working days between March 25 and April 1. Both shutdowns were in response to the limited supply of semiconductor chips needed for its vehicles.
Craig Koven, Subaru of Indiana Automotive Communications and External Relations Manager at the U.S. plant, told Torque News, We expect approximately 15,000 vehicles will be affected. The company didn t say how many workers are affected. ....

A New Subaru Plant Shutdown Affects 15,000 Vehicles Including 2022 Outback

Torque News reported earlier this month the Subaru Yajima Plant in Gunma, Japan, would suspend production April 10–27, 2021. We said the Subaru plant in Lafayette, Indiana, also shut down between March 25 and April 1.
A spokesman for Subaru of Indiana Automotive told Torque News today, Due to an interruption in the supply of certain parts that use semiconductors, Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) has temporarily suspended production for the weeks of April 19 and 26 (total of 10 days). We are scheduled to resume on May 3.
This new U.S. plant shut down will likely affect 2022 Subaru Outback production and the all-new 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness production. The new models are expected to reach retailers this summer. The SIA spokesmen also said, We expect approximately 15,000 vehicles will be affected. ....

2020 was a challenging year for Subaru, one of the smallest Japanese automakers. But 2021 is starting with new worries for Subaru of America. Subaru Corporation shut down its Japanese plants and the manufacturing facility in Lafayette, Indiana, at the beginning of the year. It s affecting inventory of the 2021 Forester, Outback, and Crosstrek, and other models.
According to a new report from the Automotive News Research & Data Center, Subaru plant shutdowns reduced January output by about 20,200 vehicles because of the recent microchip shortage. AutoForecast Solutions projects this number will increase.
This is problematic for Subaru because another report by Cox Automotive says Subaru of America continues to have the tightest days supply of cars of any automaker in the U.S. in 2021. ....
