The return of the American chestnut tree in Fluvanna – Fluvanna Review

Growing up we heard about the chestnut tree in literature, heard it in Christmas songs, and some may remember, in places like New York City, street vendors selling roasted chestnuts. It was common to see chestnut trees in the wild and it was part of American life. They survived for 40 million years and died out within 40 years. In north-eastern America, there were three billion trees and 25 percent of the trees in the Appalachian Mountains were chestnut but the number of surviving trees 24” in diameter is now fewer than 100.
“The chestnut trees, once a dominant tree of the Eastern deciduous forest, had been decimated by a blight in the early 1900s. Their nuts were a valuable source of food for wildlife and humans, while the wood was highly prized with its rot-resistant quality as well as strength. TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WSFA) - April 27, 2011, is considered one of the largest super-tornado outbreaks in Central Alabama history. 253 were killed in the state that day, and at least 1,998 were injured. But thousands more have stories from their experience that day.
A study from the University of Alabama Center for Business and Economic Research reports nearly 14,000 homes were either destroyed or declared uninhabitable due to the outbreak. One of those homes taking damage was Phillip and Pam Russell in Pleasant Grove, part of Jefferson County. ....

FCPR hosts drive-thru Celebration of Lights – Fluvanna Review

Fluvanna County Parks and Recreation (FCPR) put a twist on their Celebration of Lights event due to the current COVID-19 restrictions. In the past, there was a tree lighting celebration at Pleasant Grove with small activities, but to keep the holiday cheer alive this year, local businesses, churches, groups, clubs, organizations, and any who wanted to set up a holiday themed family-friendly lights display were invited to set up at Pleasant Grove Park on Dec. 18 and 19 for all county members to enjoy from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The event was a drive thru experience and no walking pedestrians were allowed. Cars drove the loop around the park with Santa greeting vehicles as they drove by him. ....
