Lawmakers Eye Casino-Backed Gun Ban Despite Broad Opposition

SB452 gives casinos of a certain size the ability to call the police whenever anyone but law enforcement carries a firearm onto their property without staff having to first give them a warning.
Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro presented the measure during a four-hour joint session of the Senate and Assembly Judiciary Committees Saturday.
“Private businesses already have the ability to prohibit firearms on their premises. That is something they may already do, and we are trying to seek to make sure that is something they can properly enforce,” said Cannizzaro.
While presented as a matter of public safety, opponents saw it as a dramatic violation of civil liberties. ....

Nevada’s Senate and Assembly Judiciary committees in a joint session on Saturday, May 22, approved of a bill that would allow casinos to prohibit firearms on their properties despite bipartisan opposition that far outweighed support for the bill.
Senate Bill 452, which is now headed to the full Senate, has been called “gun-free zone” legislation by the National Rifle Association’s policy arm and a “stop-and-frisk” bill by the ACLU of Nevada. It would ban both open and concealed carry of firearms at prohibited locations, but it includes exceptions for casino security and law enforcement, residential unit owners and ....

“This simply is a potentially deadly bill with good intentions,” said Athar Haseebullah, executive director of the Nevada ACLU.
Clark County Public Defender John Piro also expressed concerns the bill would lead to stop and frisk actions by the Metropolitan Police called to the scene for a suspected firearms violation. He too said the victims would invariably be disproportionately people of color.
Sen. Ira Hansen, R-Sparks, who said the bill “is almost asking to pat some one down.”
