U.S. imposes sanctions on 2 children of Myanmar coup leader
The U.S. government said Wednesday it has added two adult children of Myanmar s coup leader to a list of people subject to U.S. sanctions over the Feb. 1 military takeover and subsequent deadly violence against anti-coup protesters.
The Treasury Department s Office of Foreign Assets Control said the sanctions are imposed on Aung Pyae Sone and Khin Thiri Thet Mon the children of Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing as well as their six companies.
The U.S. government imposed sanctions on Min Aung Hlaing and other officers on Feb. 11 following the coup, which ousted the country s elected government. It said then that the spouses and adult children of the individuals could also be blacklisted.
With the turmoil in Myanmar showing no signs of abating a month after the coup, some Myanmar people living in Japan are urging their host country to suspend aid to the Southeast Asian nation as part of international pressure on the military to restore the democratically elected government.
Japanese journalist briefly detained in Myanmar while covering protests
A Japanese freelance journalist in Myanmar said Friday he was detained by security forces while covering anti-coup protests in the country s largest city Yangon, but he was released hours later and he did not suffer any injuries.
Local media showed pictures of Yuki Kitazumi, with a camera around his neck, walking out of the gates of the Sanchaung township police station after 4 p.m. Kitazumi was detained around noon Friday.
