Time is running out for embattled Pacific leatherback sea turtles

Time is running out for embattled Pacific leatherback sea turtles
by Marlowe Starling on 30 April 2021
Marine biologists warn that the western Pacific leatherback could go extinct without immediate conservation measures and transnational cooperation.
This subpopulation has decreased at a rate of 5.6% each year for an overall 80% decline over a 28-year period, according to a recent study.
While the IUCN lists the species as a whole as vulnerable, the Pacific populations are critically endangered partly because of their long migratory routes through the high seas, where they face threats like drift gillnet fishing, ship strikes and pollution.
The eastern Pacific subpopulation, which nests in Mexico and Central and South America, faces similar threats. Both populations are at high risk of extinction. ....

Woods Hole, Mass. (February 25, 2021) Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) along with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries have released the first broad scale synthesis of available information derived from right whale health assessment techniques. The manuscript published today in the science journal
Diseases of Aquatic Organisms, reviews available tools, and current understanding of the health status and trends of individual whales and the species. The paper concludes with recommendations for additional information needs and necessary management actions to enhance the health of individual right whales. ....

New Study May Explain Long, Humped Sea Serpents and Lake Monsters

Tales of sea serpents and sea monsters have been around ever since humans climbed onto a log to float and decided there must be a better way to sail. They’ve been depicted in stories and movies, pictured on maps and gravitated to lakes, where a few have attained celebrity status (we’re looking at you, Nessie!). And yet … there has never been a plausible explanation for them, especially the massively long, multiple humped versions of lore that couldn’t be written off as giant squids, giant dinosaurs or giant anything else. That changed recently when one researchers studied hundreds of historical sea serpent reports around the British Isles and noticed something many of those multi-humped sea monsters had in common – something that could explain their existence, even in modern times. Was he looking at you too, Nessie? ....

NOAA Fisheries to Hold Public Hearings on Proposed Critical Habitat for Ringed and Bearded Seals

NOAA Fisheries to Hold Public Hearings on Proposed Critical Habitat for Ringed and Bearded Seals

NOAA Fisheries will hold three public hearings on proposed rules to designate critical habitat in U.S. waters off the coast of Alaska for Arctic ringed seals and the Beringia distinct population segment of bearded seals under the Endangered Species Act.
NOAA Fisheries opened a 60-day public comment period on the proposed rules when they were published in the Federal Register on January 8, 2021. The proposed critical habitat in the northern Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort seas provides sea ice conditions that are essential for ringed and bearded seal pupping, nursing, basking, and molting, as well as primary prey resources to support these seals. For bearded seals, the proposed critical habitat also provides acoustic conditions that allow for effective communication for breeding purposes. ....
