The opening words of a traditional Pontian song of mourning summarises the annual Greek Genocide Commemoration at the Marana Hall in Hurstville, southern Sydney, led by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia and attended by about 400 representatives of the Hellenic, Armenian, Assyrian, Jewish and Australian communities.
The Commemoration was organised by the Hellenic Genocide Commemoration Committee, the united effort of NSW’s three Pontian associations – Pontoxeniteas (President Maria Anthony), Panayia Soumela Sydney (President Peter Papoulidis) and Diogenes Wollongong (President Nick Chrissostomidis), together with the Federation of Pontian Associations of Australia. Earlier this month, Melbourne commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, with a number of events.
The Battle of Crete was one of the most dramatic battles of the Second World War. Over 12 days in May 194, a mixed force of New Zealanders, British, Australian and Greek troops desperately tried to fight off a huge German airborne assault. Despite suffering appalling casualties, the parachutists and glider-borne troops who led the invasion managed to secure a foothold on the island and eventually gained the upper hand. The battle ended with the evacuation to Egypt of the bulk of the Allied force. ....

CHURCHES across the Continent are experiencing a second year of impaired Easter celebrations, after restrictions were re-imposed to counter a new spike in coronavirus infections.
In France, Spain, and Italy, churches have stayed open for public worship, subject to sanitisation rules agreed with governments. The rules are strictest in districts where full lockdowns and curfews are in force (News, 12 March).
In these countries and elsewhere, Roman Catholic leaders have urged parishes to comply with a directive from the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship, reapplying March 2020 guidelines for public and online worship. ....
