Midsumma Pride, run by the decades-old arts and culture organisation Midsumma Festival, is facing fierce calls from two top state and local advocacy groups to ban cops from its annual parade on 23 May. For almost two decades, the authorities have taken part in Midsumma Pride, with a contingent from the Victoria Police and Sheriff’s Office Of Victoria set to march in the emergency services wave this year. ....

Castricum, a pioneering Australian musician and DJ, was stopped from using the bathroom in a club in Melbourne, Victoria, early Monday morning (8 March). A security guard at Yah Yah’s, a popular rock n’ roll venue in the Fitzroy neighbourhood, cornered Castricum. “You’re a man, go to the men’s bathroom now,” he said, Castricum recalled to the newspaper ....
More than 6000 young people, aged between 14 and 21, answered questions on education, homelessness, harassment, mental health and community connections over 2019. La Trobe Associate Professor Adam Bourne said the report found that LGBTI young people did suffer ongoing and significant stigma, discrimination, violence and abuse including “in public, in their homes, on the sports field and at school”. “We have to recognise that context as we reflect upon the very high rates of poor mental health that we documented,” Bourne said. Marina Carman, co-author, La Trobe Research Fellow and Director of Rainbow Health Victoria said meaningful and sustained action is still required to try and stop “harm before it occurs”. ....
