Germanna Community College staff watched as a woman wandered by a food distribution event held on the collegeâs Fredericksburg campus in December. They could tell she was uncomfortable accepting free food. Though she told them she had recently become unemployed, she clearly âfelt weird taking the food,â said Jessica Thompson, an employee of Germannaâs Educational Foundation. Thompson organized the food distribution event to help students and their families who have been financially affected by the pandemic as part of Germanna Cares, an umbrella initiative that includes the collegeâs food pantry, career clothing closet, cold weather clothing drive and staff and student emergency funds. ....

The second round of CARES Act funding is being delivered to non-profits working to help people in the Fredericksburg region during the pandemic. Fredericksburg City recently received a second allocation from the CARES Act Community Development Block Grant-Coronavirus Funds in the amount of $206,000. This funding comes through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will be used for various community coronavirus-related development programs. The first will be for emergency housing assistance through the Central Virginia Housing Coalition, which has seen an increased demand for rent assistance during the pandemic not just in the number of requests but in the amount needed for each household. The coalition received $80,000 from the city from the first CDBG-CV funding allocation. ....
