Presque Isle Electric & Gas Communities First Fund awards grants, scholarships | News, Sports, Jobs

ONAWAY Members of Presque Isle Electric & Gas Co-op continue giving generously through their voluntary round-up of change on their electric and natural gas billings to assist area community organizations and individuals. These member contributions to the PIE&G Communities First Fund enable grants and scholarships in their local communities within PIE&G’s service area.
PIE&G Communities First Fund recently awarded $10,797 in local grants and $13,000 in scholarships to area high school seniors.
At their March meeting, the PIE&G Communities First Fund board of directors finalized review of applications and made awards of $9,684. In April, the board made one award of $1,113. In addition, the board approved 12 $1,000 scholarships and two additional scholarships at $500 each that were awarded to local high school students. Tech issues move fire department discussions to later date | News, Sports, Jobs

A pair of key issues regarding the fire department were tabled until a future meeting, after technical difficulties threw a monkey wrench into the Alpena Township Board of Trustees meeting Monday.
Discussions on the township’s fire department, and information about a public input session regarding it, were shelved, for now.
The fire department is extremely understaffed, and the City of Alpena is currently manning the north station to assist in emergency response.
From the meeting’s onset, there were bugs with audio and video. After about 20 minutes of troubleshooting, some of the trustees who were at home, quickly drove to the township offices to meet in person. ....

ALPENA The hunt is on for the 2021 Alpena Community College Distinguished Graduate, an honor awarded each year to an ACC alumnus who has achieved remarkable success in life.
Established in 1998 by the ACC Foundation, the ACC Distinguished Graduate award honors ACC alumni who have gone on to contribute to society through successful careers. Its recipients are examples of how a solid educational foundation from ACC can launch a lifetime of achievements.
The 2020 Distinguished Graduate was Thomas Sobeck (’88), president and chief financial officer of Presque Isle Electric and Gas Cooperative. Other past recipients of the honor include Keith Wallace, Dr. James E. Stoddard, Frank McCourt, Roger Bauer, and Kurt Golder. ....

Recent actions by school boards in Northeast Michigan:
∫ Thomas Catalano and Shannon McKinstry were formally seated on the Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education last week after taking the oath of office. McKinstry was elected in November and will serve a six-year term. Catalano was appointed in December to fill a vacancy and will serve through November 2022.
The board also selected Karen Spens as secretary during its organizational meeting. Greg Zurakowski remains board president, Diane Schultz remains vice president, and Ivy Cook remains treasurer.
The board also met behind closed doors for an employee disciplinary matter. The closed session was requested by the employee, which is allowed under state law. After emerging from the closed session, the board affirmed Superintendent Nick Hein’s response to the matter. ....
