BOOK REVIEW: 'The Last Shah' - Washington Times

ANALYSIS/OPINION:
Chalk one up to Jean Baptiste Tavernier, a 17th century French diamond trader who left us an account of his travels in Persia. After years of interaction with Persian merchants, ministers and monarchs, he concluded that, “The Persians are naturally great dissemblers and flatterers; and they make it their study to acquire esteem and applause,” while, at the same time, being “mightily addicted to ill language, and foul-mouthed reproaches.”

Why US presidents stay friendly with regimes like Saudi Arabia

Associated Press
Despite the US finding that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman approved the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, President Joe Biden has declined to directly punish Saudi Arabia.
Like his predecessors, Biden sees Saudi Arabia as needed for certain US objectives in the Middle East, writes Jeffrey Fields, professor of practice of international relations at the University of Southern California.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman approved an operation … to capture or kill Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to a scathing new report from the Biden administration.
Yet President Joe Biden says the US will not sanction the Saudi government, calculating that any direct punishment could risk Saudi Arabia s cooperation in confronting Iran and in counterterrorism efforts. ....

A Reporter Looks Back: Remembering George Schultz

AFP
Reporters who covered Secretary of State George P. Shultz liked to refer to him as “Buddha” because of his calm demeanor in the face of world crises.
Shultz, who died on Feb. 6 at the age of 100, was perhaps best known for working with President Ronald Reagan to help end the Cold War.
It’s not easy to sum up the career of a statesman who served for six and a half years as Secretary of State during a time of turmoil overseas. His was the longest tenure since that served by Dean Rusk.
Rusk served for eight years, from early 1961 until January 20, 1969. ....
