The Houma Navigational Canal Project is advancing to construction using an alternative financing plan.
Louisiana officials have announced that construction on a $366 million flood protection project will begin using an alternative financing plan approved by the state legislature earlier this year.
The
Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) said Dec. 9 that the plan will be used for the flood-protection lock project in the
Houma Navigation Canal (HNC). It will allow the agency to incur debt or issue bonds to pay for projects. The lock will play a critical role in Terrebonne Parish s hurricane protection system. ....

Restoring North Breton Island - Dredging Today

Restoring North Breton Island
Construction works officially started on North Breton Island, LA, a couple of days a go
with the first cubic yards of dredged sand placed on the island.
The long awaited project was approved in 2014 as one of the three components of the Deepwater Horizon Natural Resource Damage Assessment Phase III Early Restoration Louisiana Outer Coast Project.
The restoration project will add 400 acres of barrier island wildlife habitat to address some of the injuries to birds caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Sand for the project will come from the sea floor of the Gulf of Mexico three miles away from the island. Sand will be placed on the north end of the island first where mangroves provide valuable brown pelican habitat. ....

Gov. John Bel Edwards today signed an executive order creating the Atchafalaya River Basin Restoration and Enhancement (ARBRE) Task Force to address long-standing issues in the basin and raise public awareness of the critical nature of these concerns.
âThe irony of the Atchafalaya Basin is that while it is suffering from an abundance of sediment, the rest of our coast is experiencing a severe sediment deficit,â Edwards said. âThe basinâs stressors are not only harming water quality and the environment but also threatening the capacity of the basin to carry flood waters from the Mississippi and Red Rivers safely and effectively. The basin is the nationâs largest river-basin swamp with a rich ecology, and it is past time that it receive more focused attention here in Louisiana and nationally.â ....
