A Minnesota man who trespassed on Red Lake Indian Reservation land, illicitly killed a 700-pound black bear, then returned the following day to take photos and saw off the animal s head, will spend more than a year in prison
Brett James Stimac, of Brainerd, was sentenced Wednesday to 15 months in prison followed by a year of supervised release, plus a $9,500 fine, according to the U.S. Attorney s Office District of Minnesota. The 41-year-old had pleaded guilty in September of 2020 to wildlife trafficking and trespassing on Indian land. ....

A Minnesota man who beheaded a 700-pound black bear while trespassing on Native American land and then posted photos of the carcass online has been jailed.
Brett James Stimac, 41, from Brainerd, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison, followed by one year of supervised release, after the incident at the Red Lake reservation in northwestern Minnesota on September 1, 2019. He has also been fined $9,500.
According to court documents, Stimac, who is not an enrolled member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa, wilfully, knowingly and without authorization or permission entered the reservation that evening for the purposes of hunting a bear. ....

Brainerd man sentenced to prison for wildlife trafficking

ST. PAUL, Minn. A Brainerd, Minn., man was sentenced in federal court today for wildlife trafficking and trespassing on Indian land after removing the head of a 700-pound black bear on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.
Brett James Stimac, 39, was sentenced by Judge Susan Richard Nelson to 15 months in prison, followed by one year of supervised release, and a $9,500 fine.
According to court documents, on the evening of Sept. 1, 2019, Stimac, who is not an enrolled member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians, willfully, knowingly and without authorization or permission, entered the Red Lake Indian Reservation for the purposes of hunting a bear. The Government contends that Stimac, using a compound bow, shot and killed a large American black bear near the Reservation’s garbage dump. ....
