The government on Tuesday informed Parliament that it has ear-tagged 14.62 crore livestock, including pigs, with a 12 digit unique identification number. Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Sanjeev Kumar Balyan, in his written reply to the Lok Sabha, said the government is ear-tagging livestock with a 12-digit unique identification number under a central scheme National Animal Disease Control Programme for Foot and Mouth Disease and Brucellosis (NADCP).
Just about everybody knows the COVID-19 pandemic started spreading from a wildlife meat market in China.
Lots of people know it has been traced to a virus that jumped from bats to humans.
Not nearly as many know that Montana has been a world leader in researching those catastrophic diseases.
And now those researchers warn that the ways people manage the remaining wild landscape could cause even deadlier outbreaks than the one weâre enduring now.
âMontana is also home to one of the few international research centers on global infectious diseases that originate in bats,â said Raina Plowright, an associate professor of microbiology at Montana State University. âBetween MSU and Rocky Mountain Labs, we have one of the largest groups working on bats in the world. And the pathogens we mostly focus on can be more fatal than coronavirus.â
The Montana Legislature is considering the first two in a slate of bills that could impact the management of bison in and traveling through the state.
Rep. Marvin Weatherwax, D-Browning, brought House Bills 311 and 312 before the House Agriculture Committee this week. Both bills deal with state regulations and processes for moving bison when they are destined for Indian reservations.
Bison are incredibly important culturally, economically and as food to many tribes with several sustaining their own herds, Weatherwax said. But those herds are generally too small to sustain genetic diversity without introducing new animals, and the tribes source those animals from places such as Yellowstone National Park or herds from other Indian reservations, he said.
