From staff reports READY TO LAUNCH 50TH SEASON â From left, Crystal Sharma, Kelsey Ohler and Connie Wendel are all smiles after receiving their scripts from Director Diana Mendel, right, for âFour Old Broads,â which the Brooke Hills Playhouse will present May 28-30 and June 4-6 during what is the kickoff of its celebratory 50th anniversary year. Brooke Hills Playhouse is located in Brooke Hills Park, about 5 miles east of Wellsburg. On Fridays and Saturdays the show starts at 8 p.m. Box office opens at 7 p.m. On Sundays the show starts at 2 p.m., and the box office opens at 1 p.m. Ticket prices are $12 for adults; $10 for seniors (55 years and older) and students; and $8 for children. Season ticket holders from 2020 may use their remaining tickets for the 2021 season. Season tickets for the four shows of 2021 will be $36 for adults; $30 for seniors and students; and $24 for children. Checks should be made out to BCAC and include a self-addressed, stamped envelop ....

JIM COCHRAN Local historian Thomas James recently donated three military reference books that he compiled and gave to the three Marshall County libraries–Moundsville, Cameron and Benwood-McMechen. The book is titled “Honored Patriots of Marshall County, West Virginia.” James undertook this research project at the invitation of the Marshall County Commission. His work details the military service of 464 county soldiers who died in the line of duty. The scope of the project encompasses those who served in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Gulf Wars. The names of these soldiers are engraved on five granite monuments in the Veterans Plaza on the Marshall County Courthouse. ....
Billiard WELLSBURG Paul “Bud” Billiard will be remembered by many Ohio Valley residents for leading the Brooke High School football team to three state championships, seven OVAC championships and 185 wins among 265 played over a 23 year period. But in his retirement, he applied his energy and enthusiasm to improving Brooke Hills Park, supporting the development of the Brooke County Veterans Memorial Park and other projects and services undertaken by the various community boards for which he volunteered. As one of many remembering Billiard, who died Tuesday at the age of 79, Brooke County Commissioner A.J. Thomas noted the long-time coach never lost his love for football, often using gridiron terms in everyday conversation, while applying “the same passion to everything he did in the community.” ....

For Paul “Bud” Billiard, it didn’t matter. Whether it involved his family, teaching, coaching or even his service to Brooke County, Billiard was always all about the kids. And that dedication to the youth of Brooke County is how he is being remembered by many who knew him well after his death Tuesday morning at the age of 79. “Budro did so many positive things,” an emotional Ron Mauck, who was the Brooke High School Director of Athletics during much of Billiard’s coaching tenure, said. “He gave his life to what he believed in. And that was kids. And you really can’t ask for any more from someone than that.” ....
