Edible landscapes can be attractive and provide fruits, vegetables, herbs and even edible flowers in the same space where ornamental trees, shrubs and flowers are typically grown. Everything old is new again Edible landscaping is not new, but is currently undergoing a revival. Ancient Persian gardens combined both edible and ornamental plants and medieval monastic gardens included fruits, vegetables, flowers and medicinal herbs. Sara Jordan-Heintz Contributing writer MADRID After the derecho that hit the Midwest in August destroyed approximately 40% of the Iowa Arboretum & Gardens’ collection of trees, Tyler Johnson, curator of collections and grounds, is launching a “ReLeaf” campaign fundraiser in the form of a webinar series. Of the Arboretum’s more than 700 trees on its 40-acre main campus, over 275 were destroyed. The goal for this year is to plant 75-85 trees at the cost of $35,000. The cost could go up to $75,000, he said. All the new trees would be planted over a three-year period. “Across the street, we’ve got probably at least over $100,000 worth of damage and repair to go,” he said. ....
February 10, 2021 Nancy Lawson, founder of Humane Gardener, author, habitat consultant, national speaker on garden ecology, naturalist, and certified Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional, will be a featured speaker at the 27th Gardening in the Northern Neck seminar. The seminar, hosted by the Northern Neck Master Gardeners (NNMG) and Virginia Cooperative Extension, will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 20. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the seminar will be conducted virtually via Zoom. The theme is “Be Intentional: Create Liveable, Edible, Sustainable Garden Spaces,” said NNMG president Marge Gibson. “Other speakers will include Brie Arthur, horticulturist and foodscape consultant, and Vincent Simeone, garden writer and horticulturist.” ....
